Title: All for a Boy

Directors: Jasmit Cholia and Zara Sayed

Stars: Samandeep Bains, Rishad Dahag, Zara Sayed

Make Up + Boys - School = All For A Boy
All for a boy is a short docudrama giving us an insight of what girls of the 21st century get into. we follow a 15 year old teenage girl who faces difficulties in choosing between BOYS and EDUCATION.
All for a boy uses binary oppostions techniques by the use of this we are able to recognise the differences between the protagnist Saman and Zara is shown as a negative role which is represented ted by showing her in a dark surrounding (pink scene) where as Saman was represnted as relaxed because of her calm atmosphere, this helps us identify the characters role.
Interesting Facts:
Whilst filming Rishad and Zara's scene the amount of times we had to reshoot it due to Rishad being camera shy Awww...
Our initial idea of having a conversation betweeen Zara and Aaron was RUINED because zara went home and filmed over it Ooops...
Saman collected ever single teddy that she could find in her house and displayed them in a certain way so that every single one was shown on the screen ..LOL

‘All for a Boy’ is a short length docu-drama which gives us an insight of the things girls of the 21st century get caught up in. This docu-drama helps us recognise the fact that, girls are no longer worrying about achieving high grades in their education, but would rather go to certain lengths to please boys. Lets see the world through 15-year-old Zara’s eyes, the protagonist who is represented in a negative way, because of the way she acts, dresses and comes across to people. How will she cope when she struggles to choose between education and boys?

The docu drama opens with a montage sequence of Zara getting ready for school mixed with a combination of preview clips which we will later come face to face with in the drama. By including these preview like clips, enigma is created from the start and it meets a target of entertaining its audience. The use of cinema verity style footage crates realism and authenticity keeping the audience in suspense creating more enigma codes, also notice the split screen shots showing us the differences between Zara and Saman.

Zara the protagonist feels as if there is nothing more important in her life than her relationship. We see her go to extreme lengths to keep it all in one piece, even if it does mean forgetting about school. On the other hand, we have a bright student who focuses on nothing but her education, Saman. Saman is represented in a positive role to Zara. In the drama we notice how Saman finds Zara a threat, but she cannot stand up to her leaving her words unspoken.

Interesting Facts:

The infamous Pink Scene which was shown to the class, was UNFORTUNATELY shot in the wrong camera mode, making it look as if it was done on a camera phone. This meant we had to film it again, we did but it wasn’t as good as the first one.

The point of view shot of Zara sneaking into the house was shot at Saman’s house with me actually holding the camera in one hand and trying to open the door in the other! No wonder it was so authentic!!

The scene where Saman is ringing Zara had to be shot like 3 times. The worse thing was that Saman decided to get changed twice, half way between the shots!!

EvAlUaTiON fOr ALL FOR A BOY

For my practical production, I worked with Zara to produce a short docudrama called ‘All For A Boy’. The docudrama is concentrated on a 15-year-old teenager who copes with situations many girls in the 21st century deal with, when it comes to a deciding between education and boys. We chose the title for our docudrama as ‘All For A Boy’ as it is based around a boy and how she devotes her life to him, this would grab our target audience attention and make them want to watch it as our primary audience is females, this would occur more to them as there is a female protagonists that plays the main role in the docudrama.

We both decided the job roles and responsibilities that we both undertook, as I filmed and Zara played the main role in the docudrama and we both shared responsibilities to do editing. However when it came to editing it was a very stressful time as we had difficult circumstances to deal with but we did overcome the difficulties and it did work out for the better. My role between us both was to film the whole docudrama, input on ideas and a lot of editing as there were only two of us, it was difficult but we got through it successfully.

Our opening sequence was a montage of shots of short snap shots of Zara the female protagonist in uniform, and short main bits of what will be happing in the docudrama. This was done to convey to the audience was the girl putting on makeup and getting dressed for school or is it more like her boyfriend? As it tells us its all about her life as well as seeing scenes of her and main scenes that will be in the docudrama itself. The music we use with this we think worked really well as we decided to have Crazy in love, a song which tells us the girl is wrapped up in his love and that she’s going ‘crazy’ over her boyfriend but we only used the beginning of the song which does not real use much dialogue but the title itself expresses and introduces the character.

Our docudrama we thought uses a TODROV narrative theory and Rabigers suggestion, as it tells a beginning, middle and an end, furthermore it tells a good narrative as well. As it starts with a equilibrium and it then later on creates a disequilibrium which drags the attention in to the docudrama more as this is when Zara comes to a state of mind where her boyfriend dumps her and fails her GCSE exams and then in the end we see Zara realizing her mistakes and sees it was not worth what she done was ‘All For A Boy’.

We also used the theory of PROPP when the heroine being the main protagonist Zara as she comes across many situations which are arisen in the docudrama and overcomes it by understands what she’s doing wrong. We also see binary oppositions between the two characters Zara and Saman this is used to show the characters parallel links. In addition we use dual narrative, this is where we show two stories happing at the same time, as we will see good (Zara) VS evil (Saman) when you see a bedroom scene to show the audience what they both doing at one time we shows this by using a split screen of them both when they both are meant to be doing homework but what the audience really see is one doing the right thing and completing her homework but on the other hand you see the total opposite when zara does not do her homework instead she finds giving her boyfriend 100% attention more important.

Further more we decided to interview zara’s schoolteacher, to discuss her behavior and her attitude towards educations and school, and we also put in vox popz to show what other teenager’s views were of on what they thought of ‘how boys affect girls’? As the situation is arisen over boys taking control over a teenage girls life, making them a main priortory in the girl life’s and the things they may do to stop them from getting a education which may affect them long term as they would not succeed much in life. During the interview we bold out main words such as make up, boys and fashion as he mentions have become more important then education, this would draw the target audience’s attention towards what he is saying.

In module 2 we studied ‘Bowling For Columbine’, we noticed some of the similarities between documentaries as we use main conventions as Michael Moore does such as voice over, editing styles theories such as PROPP, TODROV, he also uses binary oppositions between Michael Moore and Charlton Heston and shows himself in a good view and Charlton Heston in a bad position. As our music we used was Parraell to the scenes when zara breaks up with her boyfriend they are arguing and we put a slow song representing what the girl is feeling. After the opening sequence we have a short voice over to introduce on the main female character, as it would let the audience know exactly what is going on and narrative the documentary is, similarly Michael Moore uses the same technique.

We also use non linear technique were there is flashback on the scenes when zara is with her boyfriend, this would show how she was meant to be in school this is shown when she argues with her teacher a flashback appear of Zara and Ali together in black and white letting the audience know where she was but however making her excuse up for why she was late to his lesson, nevertheless this represented and informed how boyfriends tend to make girlfriends late for school and don’t consider it important whereas the female is wrapped up in the lust that she forgets about her main concern and devotes herself all to her boyfriend.

It may lead from negligible things like being late fore school and not competing homework but when it came to exams it becomes a different story and leads back to revising all the work learnt if your hardly in lessons and never completing work your only expected to fail, we wanted to show the audience how the girl would give everything up all for the boy but what happened when he decides to leave her, but when it happens the girl is so heart broken and upset she does not concentrate revising and on her exams what it more likely for girls leads to fail, and later on in life may reflect as not succeeding to what they may of wanted to become.

All for a boy is shown on a commercial channel (PSB), which is channel 4 and would be shown after water schedule, and when more of our target audience would most likely be watching television. The channel broadcasts documentaries and similar situations, which teenage have to face on a day-to-day basis.

In conclusion all for a boy’s purpose was to educate and inform our target audience as well as entertaining them about how teenage girls have become in today’s society and what extents they would go ‘All For A Boy’.

Practical Production Evaluation - All for a Boy

For my practical production, I worked in a pair and produced a short Docu-drama called ‘All for a Boy.’ It represents a 15-year-old girl who is more concerned about make-up, boys and fashion rather than school, education and her future career. In order for us to relate to the docu-drama, we thought it would be good for the title to be called ’All for a Boy’ as it would relate to our primary target audience of teenage girls.

Whilst we were deciding on the roles and responsibilities, Jasmit and me agreed to share all of the tasks equally. However, as the narrative and roles became more clearer, Jasmit was more responsible of the filming and focused a lot on the camera work, but during that time I was responsible for logging shots, making the story boards and writing the script. Whilst we were editing our production, our original idea changed so much that it was difficult to keep up with the narrative but all of the new ideas fit in perfectly well compared to what we had originally thought.

The opening of our documentary is a montage sequence showing different shots of Zara (protagonist) getting ready for school. We included this so that teenage girls could relate to the protagonist. In between these shots are small previews of scenes, which happen later on in the documentary. We specifically chose shots of the protagonist with her boyfriend, her class mate Saman, (played as an opposition) her teacher, and, when she gets her results because these were all important parts in the documentary. We decided to end the montage and introduce the title ’All for a Boy’ by having the results clip because in that, Zara looks shocked and with the title coming straight after that clip would create a sense of enigma and make the audience think of what the outcome may be. We decided that we would use a song called ‘Crazy in Love’ because it is showing how Zara is ‘crazy in love’ and doesn’t care what is going on around her.

As our production is a Docu-drama means that we could not use many of the conventions that a normal documentary would contain. Although, we did try our best to include as much as possible. We used point of view shots so that the audience could see what the characters are thinking of/doing etc. We used flashbacks so that it created a sense of irony and the audience were getting a clear picture of what was really going on. A clear example can be seen as when Zara is getting in trouble from her teacher, she lies about the bus being late whereas she was with her boyfriend. We also used cinema verite style footage, when Zara is seen running away after she receives her results. This shows that this footage was real and had not been mediated, which creates a sense of authenticity and realism.
When it came to deciding how we can compare how different Zara and Saman are to each other, we decided to use Strauss’s Binary Opposition technique. When we studied ‘Bowling for Columbine’ (2002) in Module 2, Michael Moore was shown in a more positive light to Charlton Heston and that is exactly what we did with Zara and Saman. Michael Moore also used techniques like voiceovers, which we included in the beginning. We decided to open the drama like this because we can instantly see when Zara walks in late on the phone, that she will choose boys rather than education. We did not pay much attention to detail when it came to one of our scenes; after we had changed the narrative, whilst editing we noticed when Zara has to sneak into her house, her clothes were different from the night before. When she was with her boyfriend she had her coat on, but this can be easily explained by saying that because we said ‘The following morning’ the night before Zara may have left her coat at her boyfriend’s house as she had obviously stayed out.

I believe that our Docu-drama does tell a good story, because it has a beginning middle and an end. If we include Todorov’s’s narrative theory along with Rabiger’s suggestion it is clear to see that because we had a equilibrium of Zara having a negative attitude from the start but then a dis-equlibrium; when Zara receives her results and notices she has messed up ‘All for a Boy’. We also used Propp’s narrative roles, as Zara being the hero and binary oppositions showing the differences between Zara and Saman.
The differences between Saman and Zara were shown like good vs. Evil. We decided that we would make the characters do different things to make the audience aware of how they are completely opposite to each other. We have a scene where Zara is in her bedroom using the Internet, and Saman is doing her work. The audience must notice the difference between both characters surrounding environment. We paid close attention to detail during filming, because Zara’s room was pink, which would connote how ‘girly’ she was. On the other hand Saman’s room was plain and had teddy bears surrounding her, which could mean that she has a simple life but has a warm heart.
All for a Boy will be shown on a public service broadcaster (PSB) and a commercial channel such as channel 4. We thought this would be a suitable place to show our docu drama because a lot of documentaries are shown on this channel already. We decided it was best to create a docu-drama rather than a short film because we have followed well, such as ‘Big Brother,’ which is one of channel 4’s own reality TV shows. Some of these techniques included face-to-face interviews; In big brother there are diary room entries when the house mates get to talk to the camera, in our documentary Zara is seen speaking to the camera (when she is running away after her exam results) which shows that she knows her life is being followed up by people.

Overall, All for a Boy was produced so that it can educate our primary target of girls that they should focus on what is important right now; their education, everything else comes after that. It will also teach our secondary audience of boys, how easily girls get attached to them and how they should also focus on education at this point of their lives. This was represented through Zara failing her exams because of this boy. Finally, I feel that our production did tell a good story and will definitely entertain the audience just as we planned.

This week we have been foccussing on our editing.
We have captured all of our footage onto the computer and have started to edit all of our different scenes.
We have also finished the final scene that we thought would be a good idea to use. All though this week we have to focus on our exam scene which is taking time to do because of the fact that we need children in uniform. We are hoping to sort all of this out though.
This week we will hopefully have all of our final peices captured and will be focussing on editing our scenes.

PrOgReSs RepOrT fOr hAlF tERm….

Well…
this week we should finally be finishing off our filming that we need to do… besides for the scenes we need to do at school…

During the half term we went to samanz house on Wednesday and filmed the scenes that she had to do…
The scenes saman was doing was an exact opposite of what zara did in her pink scene at home in her bedroom..

I filmed saman on doing her homework that she was given by Mr Bush in class to do for the following day.. i showed her doing her work in many different angles to see what came our better .. as i filmed 2 from different angles and a few from close up point of views of her doing her work… it was a bit difficult to film this scene because we filmed it during the day but we wanted the scene to be a night/ evening time.. so we had to make the room a bit dark but with the light on to show that it was the evening.. I also had to make sure the lighting was not to dark at the same time… hopefully the lighting came out right…

I also filmed a scene when saman as the good girl she has finished her part of the work (as it was a pair work) and decides to ring zara to see if she’s done her part of the deal.. what we will be doing with this scene, as we also filmed zara on the phone to saman.. when we start editing we will put it as a split screen to show both conversations as we will see one side of the conversation of saman and how she’s got books and work on the bed and on the other side zara just reading magazines and not bothered to do the work…

Another scene that we filmed is of when zara is sneaking in the house late... back from linking her boyfriend… we decided to have the camera showing from zara’s point of view as she films this scene…

Lastly zara has completed the log sheets and I will be completing the test screening feedback in more detail and posting it up by the
end of the week…

PrOgReSs RepOrT 3

This week we have been very busy sorting out our filming scenes we are quite behind on it... so me n zara decided to put everything together in correct order n sort out anything we needed to add or film.. And it came to a conclusion of a few more scenes to film and then our filming would be finished...

So far we have focused on…

Re shooting some scenes that we need to improve on

We also have been discussing on adding a few interviews with Mr Bush but we have to see if he can do it hopefully Mr Bush will… these interviews would be quite important to the docudrama as it would be based on how zara’s progress is in his class.. And also on how she is deals with her school work…

We also need to film when zara has her interviews on a day to day basis…

Zara at the moment is working on the introduction for the docudrama… and is decided a choice of songs to put as the introduction she has selected a few songs she may like..

1. What do you think of our blog?
What do you particularly like about it? What's especially impressive?
What could be improved? What's missing or could be added?

2. Based on what you've read on the blog (and maybe seen in test screenings in class) what suggestions do you have regarding what we could do to make our Practical Production really successful?
What other things could we include in the production?
How should we go about filming any remaining scenes or editing the footage
during post-production (+ suggestions for music, etc.)?

2nd Progress Report...

For this last week we have been collecting loads of footage to complete our docudrama. However it has been difficult to get the right setting for the scene, as well as lighting and footage techniques.

A scene we recently done this week was of Zara and her boyfriend, we show the camera from her prospectus when she’s walking towards her boyfriend. We also resolute to another good technique of a flash back scene of when zara comes late to school and she lies to her teacher that the bus was late but when she really was with her boyfriend. The scenes we recently have approached are of when zara is with her boyfriend and he breaks up with her showing how she reacts to this problem of not being with her boyfriend this is shown in a long shot between them.

Some of the techniques we will be using were mentioned by our class mates, it was one which we thought was a very good technique, it was to show the female protagonist on a day to day bases, as a camera follows her around and asks her general questions like a interview style questions which someone will ask her as they will not be seen and she will be looking into the camera to answer to her question.

We also filmed scenes of me n zara in the toilets when we take about there boyfriends, but come to the conclusion of back chatting about saman whilst she’s in the toilet, although she hers the bad comments towards her, she continues and acts likes nothing happened and handles the situation with her silence and not telling no one that in some term she may be getting bullied. Even though zara had no reason to hate and bitch about saman like she did, as we show this in a term of zara’s best friend actually saying a nice comment about her, zara knows this but still turns around and say’s nasty things towards her.

...**[JaZ]**...
2nd Progress Report...
Well, over the past week, we have been making sure that we collect as much footage as we can because we only have 1 more school week left and within this week we have already planned our re-shoots of the school scenes.

Over the past week, we have been researching a few documentaries which contain a documentary type technique. This techniques is when the protagonist is being directly interviewed by the interviewee which causes the protagonist to look into the camera. We decided to use this, so it was made clear to the audience that this protagonist is being followed around and us as the audience are viewing what their lifestyle. This idea was given to us by our class mates who said it will make the story line clearer.

We have also filmed a lot of footage which includes Zara going to see her boyfriend. We decided to film a long scene of them together because later on we can cut some bits down and use them in a flashback scene we have planned. This flash back scene will hopefully be shown when Zara is getting into trouble form the teacher and is defending herself by using an excuse of ‘the bus was late’ whereas she was really with her boyfriend.

After 4 retakes! We finally got the toilet scenes correct of where Zara and Jaz are talking about their boyfriends and then go onto Bitch about Saman. This scene is hear to show people how bitchy girls can be towards each other. Even over the most smallest thing. As our documentary contains many different purposes, one can be seen as how bullying is tolerated by people and they never tell. For instance Saman is getting bullied by Zara in a way, however she doesn’t tell any one and suffers in silence.

Creativity (A-E)
Attention to Detail (A-E)
Technical Proficiency (A-E)
2.
Then make a list of all the positive comments you received on your forms, ideally breaking them down into the different areas the class were asked to concentrate on...
(cinematography?)
(mise en scene?)
(lighting?)
(sound?)
(conventions? matching audience?)
(miscellaneous)
3.
Next, focus on any constructive criticism you received in the feedback, under the same headings as for the previous section...
(cinematography?)
(mise en scene?)
(lighting?)
(sound?)
(conventions? matching audience?)
(miscellaneous)
4.
Finally, and perhaps most importantly, write up the suggestions and ideas about how to improve and what else could be added...
What else would you (or the target audience) like to see in this production? (scenes? sequences?)
Suggestions for post-production/editing (music? voiceover? cutaways? montage? cross cutting? titles? slo-mo?)

My second research is on a TV series called space race. Space race is a BBC docudrama, which was first shown on BBC 2 from September to October in 2005. The TV series was mainly directed about a soviet rocket engineer and designer Sergei Korolev. The series invovled British, German, American and Russian teams.

The tv series is split in to different eposides which will be shown one at a time during the weeks.
The first episode was on race for rackets during the 1944 – 1949, it shows about the rockets used in the USA throughout the Second World War. It also illustrates on how they intend to make a new rocket, which would be improved from the ones used in the war.
The second episode was concerning race for satellites, this between 1953 – 1958, it informs the audience about the five tons of explosives which is tsken to america which is then used on the first sateilite Sputnik 1.
There are 2 more episodes, which are show about Race For Survival and Race To The Moon.

ReAsEaRCh fOr pRaCtIcAl pRoDuCtIoN…..

For my practical production reasearch i have decided to reasearch and analyis on a docudrama called "Cathy Come HOme ", i will be looking at the conventions and techniques used as well.

CaThY cOmE HoMe … ( 1966)

“Cathy come home” is a British docudrama, which was first released on November 1966 on BBC 1, it is known to be UK’s famous docudrama in the history of television. The film was produced by Tony Garnett and directed by Kenneth Loach.

The docudrama is about a couple which is played by Carol White as Cathy and Ray Brooks as Reg, They start a new life, and they have a child and move into a new modern house and live happily. Except one day when Reg losses his job and becomes unemployed and get evicted from there home and become homeless. Cathy’s children get taken off her and are put into social services. The film shows how she deals with sensitive issues based on this.

The issues that were raised after the film was released were, unemployment and homeless, and how mother’s should have the rights against been separated from there children. A few days after the film was launched, the film helped raise money and was given towards a homeless charity shelter.

The docudrama techniques and conventions used is, mostly realistic documentary style, the director mainly used 16mm film, and a video tape which was used on shots in the studios.
There were scenes which used realistic style which created an impact on the scene.
The scene he used it on mainly is when Cathy and Reg are evicted with their children by bailiffs from the home that they could not pay the rent for, and become homeless.
The techniques used are.. more conventional stuctures of dramatic narrative, they use cathy's own voice as narrator-analyst for the harsh social situation which she has to deal with and shows the realism of the docudrama. It is a Non fictional docudrama film. There are many different shots that are used such as low angle shots, high angle shots, mostly used medium shots and long shots. This docudrama is quite similar to the docudrama we will be producing as it is based on factual information and we will be using some of the techniques and conventions used from this film.

- "The Last Dragon"

"The Last Dragon" is a docu-drama made by "Animal Planet." The purpose of the Drama was to inform the public about a "creature" which never existed.
After viewing the drama itself, i noticed how the docu-drama creators followed various techniques to make the docu-drama look realistic.
Many of the techniques and conventions we would like to use in our docu-drama were included in this drama.
There were four differnt types of Dragons which were shown in this drama. Whenever a Dragon was Shown and described what made it so powerful, we would see close-ups of its features. There was a voiceover of the drama which narrated the story. This was used because of the fact that there weren't any specific roles for any one, but there was a voiceover which helped keep the audience on track of what is happening.
Many of the shots were Long/Medium/Close-up shots, as well as, high angle and low angle shots.
The type of music used in the drama was parallel most of the times. Actually, I don't remember seeing a clip which had contrapuntal sound to it.

The film I researched was “Borat” which was released on November 1st 2006. It is a story about a young man called “Borat” who is about to leave his home in Kazakhstan so that he can go to the USA and actually record a documentary. Whilst he is out on his journey from his home country out into a totally different world, the main focus is to see how “Borat” will actually cope with his documentary.

He uses different styles of interviewing people, as he cannot communicate well, it is hard for others to understand what he is saying. The film uses documentary techniques such as Interviews; we see Borat trying to interview politicians, African American youths etc.

The way the characters appearance comes across is very funny. It actually creates a sense of authenticity, because it seems so real. The way the character has been presented shows us how elements of mockumentary have been used so that it can create humour. Many different types of shots were used throughout this whole film. Different camera work was used like, low angle, high angle shots. Silhouette shots were used to make the actors look more glamorous. All the music used in the film, fitted well with the scenes. I think that we may contain some elements, which were used in this film in terms of the camera work, interview and the background music used.

Intro

For our practical production, we will be working in a pair (ZaRa & JaZ) to create...
aLL foR a BoY...
Don't you think that these four words summarise the whole thing up it self?
Well, for those of you who still don't know what we mean by 'aLL foR a BoY' this is the docu-drama that we have decided to create for our practical production.
It will be based around our primary audience of teenage girls between the ages of 13-19... we will be showing how
one boy...in the life of a teenage girl...can affect her...and her studies...in a very negative way.
